The UCI has released the 2021/2022 cyclocross season calendar, including 16 World Cup events. Let's take a look at the implications of the schedule and what it means for teams and athletes.
16 World Cups on the calendar
16 World Cups are on the 2021/22 calendar, and these events dominate the season with a World Cups scheduled for almost every weekend from October 10, 2021 through Jan 23, 2022. That's a huge swing from the 2020-21 season, which featured only 5 World Cups left standing after the cancellation of many races, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of this writing, there are two World Cup dates listed as "TBA" with no venue yet announced.
Note that for readers in the USA, FloBikes has the streaming rights to these 16 World Cup events for 2021/22 - making FloBikes a much better investment for cyclocross fans than it has been in previous years. Although no formal announcement has been made, the Badkamers and Superprestige events seem likely to continue on GCN+ Race TV this Fall.
Packed weekends, with Saturday and Sunday racing
Riders wishing to contest more than one series will have some hard decisions to make. The Badkamers and Superprestige series almost all occur on a "back to back" with a World Cup. In theory, this could open the door to some different winners as some riders focusing on the World Cup might skip Superprestige or X2O Badkamers events outright.
Not much room for non-series races
A whopping 15 events didn't find their way onto any of the World Cup, Superprestige, or X2O Badkamers Trofee schedules. Perhaps 8 of those 15 will likely be part of the "second-tier" Ethias Cross series; but those details have not been announced yet.
